Chopin - Structural Analysis
Directions: With your group, discuss and analyze the following aspects of the text. Have one person make a copy of this document and then share it with the other members of your group. Discuss the text together in your assigned discussion group. Everyone is responsible for making comments, annotations and observations.
1. Using the “comment” feature next to each paragraph, briefly describe what we learn about Louise Mallard in that paragraph. Consider such issues as depictions of her character and how she gradually changes after her initial epiphany. Pay close attention to how changes in weather reflect her internal “awakening.” How is her “heart disease” symbolic?
2. Highlight relevant symbols that recur throughout the story.
3. Choose three symbols that interest your group the most. On the bottom of the document, explain how your chosen symbols each support the theme. Divide the work fairly.
